The rapid adoption of immune-based cancer therapies, including immune checkpoint-inhibitors, has significantly affected the current care paradigm of patients with cancer and the associated acute complications. In particular, the non-specific adverse events of immune-based therapies, often mimicking autoimmune disorders rather than traditional cytotoxic effects, pose a significant challenge to emergency providers. In this webinar, you will learn about:

1.      The top priorities for emergency medicine providers in their day-to-day practice.

2.      The factors that influence outcomes when a patient presents to the ED with an irAE.

3.      How the oncology team can improve communication and coordination with emergency medicine providers to improve patient care.

Jason Bischof, MD

Emergency Medicine, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

I am a board-certified emergency medicine provider and a member of the Cancer Control Program at the OSUCCC – James, where my research focuses on the acute care of patients with cancer who come to the emergency department.

My research program focuses on the diagnostic uncertainty associated with pneumonia in this population and to assess the potential role of novel biomarkers in the diagnosis of pneumonia in patients with cancer. Other interests include adverse events from immunotherapy in the acute setting and medical education.

Additionally, I have authored or co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Support Care Cancer, Western Journal of Emergency Medicine and Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
