The 2020 award recipient is Lawrence N. Shulman, MD, MACP, FASCO, Professor of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania; Deputy Director for Clinical Services, Abramson Cancer Center. Dr. Shulman is internationally known as a breast medical oncologist, oncology practice thought leader, and mentor. His breast cancer work in low-resourced areas throughout the United States and overseas have led to a significant improvement in patient outcomes in areas where women are at a greater risk.
Lawrence N. Shulman, MD, MACP, FASCO is Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he is the Deputy Director for Clinical Services of the Abramson Cancer Center. Dr. Shulman leads the Cancer Quality program and strategic development of Cancer Services across the University of Pennsylvania Health System’s 6 hospitals and affiliated practices. He is also Director of the Center for Global Cancer Medicine.
Dr. Shulman is internationally known as a breast medical oncologist, oncology practice thought leader, and mentor. Dr. Shulman and his colleagues trained hundreds of clinicians in breast health care and provided breast exam screening to thousands of patients in four districts of Rwanda. The Clinical Research Award recognizes individuals whose research has significantly and positively impacted the oncology patient, family, and/or community.
The 2020 award recipient is Roy S. Herbst, MD, PhD, Ensign Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) & Professor of Pharmacology; Chief of Medical Oncology, Yale Cancer Center & Smilow Cancer Hospital; Associate Director for Translational Research, Yale Cancer Center; Interim Director, Yale Center for Immuno-oncology, Yale Cancer Center. Dr. Herbst has worked over several decades as a pioneer to identify biomarkers and bring novel targeted treatments and immunotherapies to patients, serving as principal investigator for numerous clinical trials testing these agents in advanced stage lung cancers.
His work led to the approval of several therapies that have revolutionized the field and greatly improved patient survival. His work on "umbrella” trials spurred FDA approvals of targeted therapies and new cancer drugs. Nationally, he works closely with public-private partnerships to develop large master protocol clinical studies, such as Lung-MAP.
“Dr. Herbst was selected for this award based on his distinguished and effective accomplishments in lung cancer research, having successfully integrated biology and laboratory research, team- based science, broad collaboration, and community, patient, public, and private partnerships that have served as a road map and role model for others. The David King Community Clinical Scientist Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the development, participation, and evaluation of clinical studies and/or are active in the development of new screening, risk assessment, treatment, or supportive care programs for cancer patients.
The David King Community Clinical Scientist Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the development, participation, and evaluation of clinical studies and/or are active in the development of new screening, risk assessment, treatment, or supportive care programs for cancer patients.
The 2020 award recipient is Worta McCaskill-Stevens, MD, MS, Medical Oncologist, and Chief, Community Oncology and Prevention Trials Research Group. Dr. McCaskill-Stevens’ accomplishments are far-reaching and include a focus on cancer disparities; management of comorbidities within clinical trials; and molecular research to identify individuals who will benefit most from cancer prevention interventions. Her work in breast cancer research is notable.
Dr. McCaskill-Stevens served as program director for the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) and assumed responsibilities for breast cancer prevention with NCI’s Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). She is also a member of NCI’s Breast Cancer Steering Committee. Dr. McCaskill-Stevens is also a recognized leader in furthering the advancement of minority investigators in cancer research.

Ricky Newton has over 28 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He currently serves as Director of Financial Services and Operations for the Community Oncology Alliance. Since 1997 he has been the administrator for Cancer Specialists of Tidewater, Ltd. He worked for Riverside Health Systems from July 2007 to July 2014 serving as their director for oncology operations. Prior to joining the practice he was a CPA with the public accounting firm of Failes & Associates.
Ricky has presented and consulted at over 350 conferences and practices in 46 states on topics such as financial and practice management issues in medical practices, health care law, relationships between oncologists and hospitals, managing employees, contracting with insurers, pharmacy management including managing pharmaceutical contracts, compensation models as well as other topics in the operating an oncology practice.
Currently, Ricky serves as treasurer of the Virginia Association of Hematology and Oncology Managers (VAHOM), Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologist (VAHO), Southeastern Coalition of Oncology Practitioner (SCOOP), National Oncology Society Network (NOSN) and Community Oncology Alliance (COA).
Ricky graduated with honors in 1990 from Old Dominion University with majors in Accounting and Finance.

Teri Bedard is the Executive Director, Client & Corporate Resources with Revenue Cycle Coding Strategies, Inc. Her expertise includes over 20 years of medical experience. Teri has served as a senior and Staff Radiation Therapist at renowned oncology practices across the Midwest and during her tenure with RCCS, has served as a Senior Consultant, Remote Solutions Manager, and Director, Client Services. As a member of the RCCS team Teri advises and leads clients in the areas of billing and reimbursement for technology, monitoring government regulatory information and seeking new business opportunities.
Teri completed her Bachelors of Arts degree at the University of Northern Iowa. She completed her Radiologic Technology certificate at Mayo School for Health Related Sciences in Rochester, MN and her certificate for Radiation Therapy at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. She also earned her certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
Teri is active in the ARRT, ASRT, and AAPC. She lectures and participates at national seminars in conjunction with the AAPC, ACCC, ACRO, and ASRT.
Ron DiGiaimo, MBA, FACHE
CEO, Revenue Cycle Coding Strategies
As CEO, Ron leads Revenue Cycle Inc. with more than 27 years in clinical, mid-level and executive level management, clinical experience and financial management. He is also a proven strategist in practice building, coding and documentation for both Part A and Part B reimbursement and has broad experience with marketing, operations, development and public relations.
Ron is active with ACRO, ASTRO, SROA, ACCC, ACE, AAMD, ASCO, ACHE and several other groups whose missions forward the cause of oncology. He currently assists with the publication of the American College of Radiation Oncology Practice Management Guide, which serves to educate the oncology community as a whole.
Ron earned an MBA from Oklahoma Christian University a bachelor of science in health services administration from Weber State University, Utah and an associate's degree in radiography from MCC in Waco, Texas. His clinical and strong operational management experience assist in both short and long term goal achievement for hospitals and providers alike.
Dan Sherman, MA, LPC

Dan E. Sherman, MA, LPC, has been in the field of financial navigation services for oncology patients since 2008, and is the founder and president of the NaVectis Group, a consulting company that assists oncology providers in the implementation of financial navigation programs. In 2009, he created and implemented the Financial Navigation Program at the Lacks Cancer Center, and has since been recognized by the Oncology Roundtable, Access Management, and the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Oncology Issues for his expertise in clinical financial navigation. He has also been published in the Journal of Access Management, ACCC’s Oncology Issues journal, the American Journal of Managed Care, and ASCO’s Journal of Oncology Practice.

Fred Bentley, MPP, MPH
Managing Director, Avalere
As an expert in fields ranging from payer strategy to hospital–physician alignment and post-acute care, he has worked with providers, including integrated delivery networks, academic medical centers, post-acute providers, and long-term care organizations as well as national and regional health plans. Over the past 5 years, his work has focused on supporting health systems engage in Medicare and Medicaid payment and delivery system transformation initiatives.
Prior to joining Avalere, Fred was a principal in the Accountable Care Solutions practice at The Chartis Group. In this role, he worked with leading hospitals and health systems in developing strategic roadmaps to guide their clinical innovation, population health, and cross-continuum integration initiatives. He also served as a managing director with The Advisory Board Company, managing a team of consultants and analysts who supported provider organizations ranging from physician groups and health systems to post-acute care providers.
Fred holds an MPP and MPH from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in political science from Haverford College.
Tom Gallo, MS, MDA
Executive Director, Virginia Cancer Institute
Thomas A. Gallo, MS, MDA, is executive director of the Virginia Cancer Institute in Richmond, Virginia. In this role, he manages all aspects of a 24-provider medical oncology practice with 7 medical offices, ambulatory infusion centers, laboratories, and more than 200 employees. Among his responsibilities are strategic planning, operations, financial management, personnel management, and purchasing.
Mr. Gallo has been an active member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) for more than 10 years. He served as ACCC President from 2018-2019. Currently, he also serves on ACCC’s Governmental Affairs Committee, which he previously chaired. He has presented at a number of ACCC Annual Meetings and has previously served on the ACCC Board of Trustees (2004-2005).
In addition to his involvement with ACCC, Mr. Gallo is a member of the Board of Directors of MD Value Care, an ACO of independent physician practices; past president of the Executive Committee of the MGMA Administrators in Oncology-Hematology Assembly (AOHA); a current member and former president of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologists (VAHO); and a former board member of the Community Oncology Alliance.
Prior to entering the healthcare field, Mr. Gallo was a commercial banker with Marine Midland Bank in New York City and Central Fidelity Bank in Richmond, Virginia.
He received a BA in Economics from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and an MS in Finance and a Master of Decision Analytics (MDA) degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was a Dean’s Scholar.
Tom Kornfield, MPP
Senior Consultant, Avalere Health
Tom Kornfield provides analytical support and strategic advice for clients on Medicare Advantage risk adjustment and payment, and on Part D issues. He has over 20 years of public and private sector experience in Medicare Advantage and Part D payment policy.
Prior to joining Avalere, Tom served as a vice president of Medicare policy at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). During his tenure at AHIP, he led risk adjustment policy discussions with plan members and external stakeholders. Additionally, he oversaw research and analyses about the impacts of Medicare Advantage (MA) payment and risk adjustment policies. He also helped to lead work looking at the distribution of rebates among Part D plans and contributed to analyses of the impacts of restructuring the Part D benefit.
Tom also spent 10 years working at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), where he held a variety of positions focused on MA and Part D payment policy. Specifically, Tom analyzed MA bids and payments and changes in MA payment rates, and he created a policy to allow for 5-star MA plans to market and enroll year-round.
Tom holds a graduate degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Policy. His undergraduate degree is from Hamilton College.

In her role, Rifeta works on improving processes and programs that allow for patient centered care while simultaneously building security for the health system to prevent unnecessary revenue losses. Rifeta helps support oncology patient financial advocates across five Saint Luke’s sites supporting medical and radiation oncology, surgical oncology, pediatric oncology, bone marrow transplant, and hemophilia. Rifeta is passionate about the importance of patient financial advocate roles within oncology clinics, and as a member of the supportive oncology team, is working collaboratively to eliminate financial toxicity for the patients she serves.

Angie Santiago, CRCS-I, is the Manager for Oncology Financial Advocacy, with the Thomas Jefferson University Health System, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. She created and implemented the Oncology Patient Assistance Program that is utilized at the Thomas Jefferson University Health System. The program was initiated to assist patients with the acquisition of supplemental financial coverage, over and beyond what has been traditionally provided by the hospital’s business office. Angie has worked in healthcare for almost 16 years within patient access, revenue cycle and financial counseling. She has presented on financial toxicity and related topics at patient navigators networking meetings. She is a graduate of the ACCC Financial Advocacy Network Boot Camp.
Ricky Newton, CPA
Chief Financial and Operating Officer, Cancer Specialists of Tidewater, Ltd.
Ricky Newton has over 28 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He currently serves as Director of Financial Services and Operations for the Community Oncology Alliance. Since 1997 he has been the administrator for Cancer Specialists of Tidewater, Ltd. He worked for Riverside Health Systems from July 2007 to July 2014 serving as their director for oncology operations. Prior to joining the practice he was a CPA with the public accounting firm of Failes & Associates.
Ricky has presented and consulted at over 350 conferences and practices in 46 states on topics such as financial and practice management issues in medical practices, health care law, relationships between oncologists and hospitals, managing employees, contracting with insurers, pharmacy management including managing pharmaceutical contracts, compensation models as well as other topics in the operating an oncology practice.
Currently, Ricky serves as treasurer of the Virginia Association of Hematology and Oncology Managers (VAHOM), Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologist (VAHO), Southeastern Coalition of Oncology Practitioner (SCOOP), National Oncology Society Network (NOSN) and Community Oncology Alliance (COA).
Ricky graduated with honors in 1990 from Old Dominion University with majors in Accounting and Finance.

Teri Bedard is the Executive Director, Client & Corporate Resources with Revenue Cycle Coding Strategies, Inc. Her expertise includes over 20 years of medical experience. Teri has served as a senior and Staff Radiation Therapist at renowned oncology practices across the Midwest and during her tenure with RCCS, has served as a Senior Consultant, Remote Solutions Manager, and Director, Client Services. As a member of the RCCS team Teri advises and leads clients in the areas of billing and reimbursement for technology, monitoring government regulatory information and seeking new business opportunities.
Teri completed her Bachelors of Arts degree at the University of Northern Iowa. She completed her Radiologic Technology certificate at Mayo School for Health Related Sciences in Rochester, MN and her certificate for Radiation Therapy at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. She also earned her certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
Teri is active in the ARRT, ASRT, and AAPC. She lectures and participates at national seminars in conjunction with the AAPC, ACCC, ACRO, and ASRT.

I can't login or view sessions. What do I do?
First, make sure you are using Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. The system does not work with Internet Explorer. Then, check to verify that you are logged in.
How do I access the sessions?
You can access any of the sessions by clicking on the “Sessions” tab.
From there, select the session you would like to view. Click on the title and you will see a button to the right of the session title. If the session will begin in the next 15 minutes, the button will say "Early Event Login is Open". If the session has started, it will say "Live Event in Progress". If you do not see one of those buttons, you may need to refresh your screen, especially if you log in more than 15 minutes before the session starts.
I am having audio trouble. How can I fix that?
If you are not able to hear any audio through your computer speakers first check to make sure your speakers are not muted or turned off.
The next step is to refresh your screen by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard or clicking the “refresh” button in your web browser.

We recommend a wired connection. A wired connection gives a consistent signal and consistent bandwidth. A wired connection provides a better experience. Audio (sound) is projected through your computer speakers. Be sure your computer is equipped with speakers or the room where the conference is being broadcast is equipped with speakers so you can hear the presenters.

Matt Devino, MPH
Director, Cancer Care Delivery & Health Policy
Association of Community Cancer Centers
As Director, Cancer Care Delivery and Health Policy at ACCC, Matt leads the organization’s policy and advocacy initiatives to improve cancer care delivery and promote health equity across rural, urban, and underserved settings. He also works to advance ACCC’s federal legislative and regulatory priorities, working with Congress and the Administration to support the oncology workforce and reshape reimbursement to better meet the needs of cancer care providers and their patients.
Matt has nearly a decade of experience in the healthcare industry with a strong history of working alongside and advocating for healthcare providers across the care continuum. Most recently, Matt served as an Associate Director, Government Affairs for the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) in Washington, DC. In that role, Matt had the pleasure of representing the nation’s medical group practices in Washington in front of federal agencies, congressional offices, and other provider stakeholder groups and coalitions. He was responsible for education and advocacy efforts on a variety of federal legislative and regulatory issues, including Medicare provider reimbursement, value-based payment reform and alternative payment models, COVID-19 financial relief programs, and health information technology. Matt also worked closely with MGMA state affiliate chapters in the Eastern and Western regions to organize grassroots efforts and was a frequent speaker at state and national meetings.
Matt earned his Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from The George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health and his bachelor’s degree in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology from Harvard University.
